Tiny Queen of the Homestead centres upon a Nigerian Dwarf doe standing confidently within a flower-filled pasture. The Nigerian Dwarf Breed (Capra hircus)
The Nigerian Dwarf developed from small West African goats brought overseas during the twentieth century. In North America, breeders gradually distinguished compact dairy animals from similar goats selected primarily for zoo display or companionship, establishing the Nigerian Dwarf as a recognised miniature dairy breed with its own standards and breeding records.
Despite its modest stature, the breed is valued for milk that commonly contains a high proportion of butterfat and protein. These qualities provide a rich yield for cheese, yoghurt, soap, and other small-scale dairy products, even where total milk volume is lower than that of larger breeds. Its compact build and comparatively modest feed and housing requirements have made it especially suitable for homesteads and farms where space is limited.
Nigerian Dwarfs are also noted for their intelligence, sociability, and wide variety of coat colours and patterns. Responsible breeding balances appearance and size with sound structure, udder quality, health, and productive ability. The breed therefore demonstrates how carefully managed selection can preserve useful dairy characteristics within an efficient and adaptable small farm animal.
