PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Twilight Flight captures a Grey-headed Flying-fox in full flight above the meeting point of forest, river and city. Sweeping between flowering eucalyptus branches, the animal holds its broad wings fully extended as the last colours of sunset spread across the evening sky. The fading light passes through the thin membranes, revealing a delicate network of veins, while its silver-grey head and warm russet collar remain sharply defined against the distant skyline.
Below, a winding river reflects the mauve, coral and amber tones of dusk as scattered city lights begin to appear along its banks. Other flying-foxes cross the horizon in loose formation, linking the foreground animal with the wider colony already moving into the night. Dark foliage frames the scene, creating a natural boundary between the elevated forest and the built landscape beyond. The composition captures a brief moment of balance between two worlds, revealing how native wildlife continues to move through places increasingly shaped by human settlement.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Grey-headed Flying-fox is one of Australia’s largest bats and is found mainly along the eastern and south-eastern coastline. Recognised by its silver-grey head, reddish collar and dark body, it feeds on nectar, pollen and native fruit within forests, woodlands, wetlands and coastal vegetation. Its range overlaps some of the most heavily settled parts of the continent.
As natural feeding habitat has become fragmented, many flying-foxes now forage within city parks, suburban streets, gardens and botanic reserves. These places may provide flowering trees across seasons when food is scarce elsewhere. Excellent eyesight, a strong sense of smell and an ability to remember reliable feeding locations help the animals navigate complex urban landscapes after dark.
Their presence in cities does not mean they have lost their connection with the wild. Individuals regularly travel between urban feeding grounds, natural forests and communal camps, carrying pollen and seeds as they move. The Grey-headed Flying-fox has therefore become a striking example of native wildlife adjusting to a changing environment while continuing to support forest renewal.

The Grey-headed Flying-fox is listed as Vulnerable nationally and by the IUCN following a substantial historical decline in abundance. Although large camps may create the impression that the species is plentiful, these gatherings represent a mobile population that moves between sites according to flowering conditions rather than separate, secure local populations.
Urban camps face particular pressures. Conflict over noise and odour can lead to disturbance, while powerlines, unsuitable fruit-tree netting and vehicle collisions cause injuries. Extreme heat is an increasing danger because flying-foxes roost openly in trees, and severe heatwaves can kill large numbers within a single camp.
Conservation programs aim to protect important camps while helping nearby communities live safely alongside them. Retaining shaded vegetation, reducing entanglement hazards and managing roosts without separating mothers from dependent pups are important measures. Public education also helps explain why visible urban colonies remain vulnerable and why their survival matters to forests far beyond the city.
