The Tempest Coil celebrates the striking beauty and quiet confidence of one of Australia's most distinctive inland snakes. Resting upon the cracked black-soil plains of central Queensland, Collett's Snake lies coiled beneath an approaching summer storm, its polished scales glowing with rich bands of obsidian black, copper, and deep salmon-pink in the fading light. The snake raises its head with calm awareness as distant lightning flickers across the horizon, while heavy storm clouds gather above the open grasslands. Dry native grasses frame the foreground, reinforcing the rugged character of this uniquely Australian landscape.

Collett's Snake (Pseudechis colletti)
Collett's Snake is an endemic member of Australia's black snake family, found primarily across the black-soil floodplains and grasslands of central Queensland. These inland landscapes experience dramatic seasonal changes, from prolonged dry periods to widespread flooding following summer rains. The species is well adapted to these fluctuating conditions, sheltering within deep soil cracks, beneath fallen timber, and in abandoned burrows when temperatures become extreme.
Although highly venomous, Collett's Snake is generally regarded as a calm and retiring species that avoids confrontation whenever possible. Its venom is used primarily for subduing prey such as reptiles, small mammals, and amphibians rather than for defence. Among Australian snakes, it is particularly admired for its vivid colouration, with bands of reddish-pink and copper standing in striking contrast to glossy black scales. This distinctive appearance makes it one of the most visually remarkable yet least frequently encountered reptiles of the Australian interior.

Collett's Snake is currently classified as Least Concern and remains stable across much of its natural range. Nevertheless, its distribution is closely tied to the health of Queensland's native black-soil grasslands and seasonal floodplain ecosystems. Land clearing, intensive grazing, altered fire regimes, and the loss of native ground cover can reduce suitable shelter and hunting habitat, while road mortality affects snakes moving across open country after rainfall.
Like many venomous reptiles, the species is also vulnerable to deliberate killing through fear or misunderstanding despite its generally non-aggressive nature. Conserving intact native grasslands, maintaining healthy floodplain systems, and promoting public awareness of the ecological role of snakes all contribute to the long-term security of the species. As a native predator, Collett's Snake plays an important role in regulating populations of small vertebrates and helping maintain the ecological balance of Australia's inland grassland environments.

As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
