The Appaloosa (Equus caballus) extraordinary coat patterns are the result of a distinctive genetic trait known as the Leopard Complex (LP) gene, one of the defining characteristics of the breed. This gene influences the distribution of pigment throughout the coat, producing the striking spots, blankets, and mottled markings for which Appaloosas are renowned. The expression of these patterns varies considerably between individuals, meaning no two horses display exactly the same arrangement of markings.

Inheritance of the Leopard Complex is complex and may be modified by additional genes that influence the extent and appearance of white patterning. Foals are sometimes born with relatively subtle markings that become more pronounced as they mature, while others display bold spotting from birth. Responsible breeders consider both genetics and overall conformation when planning future generations, recognising that coat colour alone does not define breed quality. The remarkable diversity of Appaloosa patterns reflects both the fascinating science of inheritance and the careful stewardship that has preserved these unique characteristics across centuries.

As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
