Superb Lyrebird (Menura novaehollandiae)
The Superb Lyrebird is one of Australia's most celebrated endemic birds and among the world's greatest vocal mimics. Native to the temperate forests and rainforest gullies of south-eastern Australia, it spends almost its entire life on the forest floor, foraging through deep layers of leaf litter for insects, spiders, worms, and other small invertebrates. Mature males are renowned for their extraordinary courtship displays, combining remarkable vocal performances with the elegant presentation of the ornate tail that gives the species its name.
Beyond its famous mimicry, the Superb Lyrebird performs a vital ecological role. While searching for food, each bird turns over vast quantities of leaves and soil, recycling nutrients, dispersing seeds, aerating the forest floor, and creating countless microhabitats for fungi, insects, and other small organisms. This continual disturbance helps maintain the health and productivity of Australia's temperate forests, making the lyrebird one of the country's most important ecosystem engineers as well as one of its most iconic birds.

The Superb Lyrebird is currently classified as Least Concern and remains widespread throughout the temperate forests and rainforest gullies of south-eastern Australia. Healthy populations persist across many national parks, state forests, and conservation reserves where extensive tracts of mature forest remain intact.
Despite its secure status, the species depends on large, connected areas of healthy forest with deep leaf litter and dense understorey vegetation. Habitat fragmentation, urban expansion, introduced predators such as foxes and feral cats, and increasingly frequent high-intensity bushfires continue to place pressure on local populations. The 2019–2020 bushfires affected a substantial proportion of the species' range, highlighting the importance of protecting unburnt refuges and supporting long-term habitat recovery. Conserving mature forests, maintaining wildlife corridors, and restoring fire-affected landscapes will help ensure this extraordinary bird continues to enrich Australia's forests through both its remarkable displays and its invaluable role in sustaining healthy woodland ecosystems.
