The Scarlet Ember celebrates the remarkable brilliance and delicate energy of the Scarlet Honeyeater, one of Australia's smallest yet most vividly coloured native birds. Perched lightly among flowering grevillea, a male pauses as it reaches toward nectar-rich blossoms, its curved bill dusted with golden pollen gathered during its morning feast. Warm sunlight streams through the surrounding foliage, igniting the bird's scarlet plumage against a softly glowing backdrop of native flowers and eucalyptus leaves.

Scarlet Honeyeater (Myzomela sanguinolenta)
The Scarlet Honeyeater is among Australia's smallest honeyeaters and one of its most striking nectar-feeding birds. Found throughout eastern and northern Australia, it inhabits coastal forests, woodland, heathland, mangroves, and gardens wherever flowering native plants provide reliable food. Adult males are instantly recognised by their brilliant scarlet plumage contrasted with glossy black wings and tail, while females wear olive-brown feathers that provide effective camouflage among foliage.
Highly active and constantly moving, Scarlet Honeyeaters travel between flowering grevilleas, bottlebrushes, banksias, paperbarks, and eucalyptus trees, following seasonal blooms across the landscape. Their slender down-curved bill and specialised brush-tipped tongue are perfectly adapted for extracting nectar from deep flowers. As they feed, pollen adheres to their faces and feathers before being carried to the next blossom, making them important pollinators that contribute to the reproduction of many native Australian plants. Their speed, agility, and constant activity bring colour and vitality to flowering forests throughout their range.

The Scarlet Honeyeater is currently classified as Least Concern and remains widespread throughout eastern and northern Australia. Populations are considered stable across much of their range, particularly where native flowering vegetation remains abundant. Their nomadic movements allow them to track seasonal flowering events, ensuring reliable nectar supplies throughout the year.
Although the species is not presently threatened, Scarlet Honeyeaters depend on healthy ecosystems rich in native flowering shrubs and trees. Habitat clearing, fragmentation of coastal woodland and heathland, and the removal of flowering vegetation can reduce the availability of vital food resources. Changes to flowering cycles associated with climate change may also affect the timing and abundance of nectar. Protecting native forests, woodlands, and flowering habitats not only supports Scarlet Honeyeaters but also the many plants that rely on these energetic birds for pollination, helping maintain the diversity and resilience of Australia's natural ecosystems.
