PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Ruby of the Reef celebrates the brilliant colour, graceful power, and quiet confidence of one of Australia's most iconic coral reef predators. Suspended within the crystal-clear waters of a tropical lagoon, the Coral Trout glides effortlessly above a flourishing coral garden, its vivid ruby-red body illuminated by shafts of sunlight streaming through the surface above. Countless sapphire-blue spots shimmer across its scales, transforming the fish into a living jewel against the intricate textures of branching corals, soft sea fans, and gently swaying seagrasses.
The composition captures a remarkable balance between elegance and authority. Rather than portraying the trout in pursuit of prey, the artwork reveals a calm and commanding presence as it patrols the reef with measured purpose. Vibrant coral formations and colourful reef fish surround the scene, celebrating the extraordinary diversity of one of Australia's richest marine ecosystems. It is a portrait of beauty and strength, honouring a species whose striking appearance is matched only by its importance within the living architecture of the coral reef.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Coral Trout (Plectropomus leopardus)
The Coral Trout is among the most recognisable and highly prized reef fish of the Indo-Pacific, occurring throughout northern Australia, the Great Barrier Reef, Coral Sea, and neighbouring tropical waters. Instantly identified by its brilliant red to orange body covered with vivid blue spots, the species occupies an important position near the top of the coral reef food web. Its streamlined body, exceptional eyesight, and powerful tail allow it to launch rapid ambush attacks on unsuspecting prey among the reef's intricate coral formations.
Beyond its ecological importance, the Coral Trout is one of Australia's most valuable reef fish, supporting both commercial and recreational fisheries that are carefully managed to ensure long-term sustainability. As a top predator, it helps maintain the natural balance of reef communities by regulating populations of smaller fishes and invertebrates. This artwork celebrates both the remarkable beauty and ecological significance of a species that has become one of the defining ambassadors of Australia's tropical coral reefs.

CONSERVATION INFORMATION.

This design donates to animal and conservation efforts
Although the Coral Trout remains globally classified as Least Concern, conservation status varies considerably across its range. Australian populations, particularly those on the Great Barrier Reef, benefit from some of the world's most comprehensive fisheries management programs, including catch quotas, seasonal closures, size limits, and extensive marine protected areas. These science-based measures have helped maintain healthy populations throughout much of northern Australia. In contrast, some regional populations in Southeast Asia and parts of the Pacific have declined due to intensive fishing pressure and demand for the live reef food fish trade.
The species also depends on healthy coral reef ecosystems for feeding, shelter, and reproduction, making it increasingly vulnerable to coral bleaching, ocean warming, declining water quality, and habitat degradation. Protecting resilient reef habitats, alongside sustainable fisheries management, remains essential for ensuring that this brilliantly coloured predator continues to thrive as one of the signature species of Australia's tropical seas.
