The Peacock Mantis Shrimp (Odontodactylus scyllarus)
The Peacock Mantis Shrimp is one of the most scientifically remarkable crustaceans in the marine world. Native to the tropical Indo-Pacific, including northern Australia, it inhabits coral reefs where it shelters within burrows and rocky crevices, emerging to hunt and defend its territory. Although commonly called a mantis shrimp, it belongs to an ancient group of crustaceans known as stomatopods, which evolved separately from both true shrimp and mantises.
Among its most extraordinary adaptations are its remarkable eyes, considered among the most sophisticated visual organs known in nature. Each eye moves independently and is capable of perceiving an exceptional range of colour, polarized light, and ultraviolet wavelengths. This complex vision helps the shrimp locate prey, recognise rivals, and communicate through subtle body signals invisible to many other animals.
Equally impressive are its powerful raptorial appendages, which strike with astonishing speed and force. These specialised limbs enable the Peacock Mantis Shrimp to crack the shells of molluscs and crustaceans while making it one of the reef's most formidable small predators.

The Peacock Mantis Shrimp (Odontodactylus scyllarus) has not yet been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, but it remains widespread throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific and is generally considered secure where healthy coral reef habitats persist. Because the species depends on reef structures for shelter, breeding, and hunting, its long-term future is closely linked to the condition of these complex marine ecosystems.
The greatest threats are indirect rather than species-specific. Coral bleaching, ocean warming, declining water quality, destructive fishing practices, and coastal development can reduce the availability of the reef crevices and living coral communities upon which the species depends. In some regions, individuals are also collected for the marine aquarium trade because of their remarkable colours and unusual behaviour. While current collection is not believed to threaten the species across its range, responsible management remains important to prevent localised declines.
Protecting coral reefs ultimately provides the greatest safeguard for the Peacock Mantis Shrimp. Marine protected areas, improved water quality, sustainable fisheries management, and continued reef restoration all contribute to preserving the extraordinary diversity of life found within tropical reef ecosystems.
