White's Seahorse (Hippocampus whitei)
White's Seahorse is an Australian endemic found along the coast of New South Wales, where it inhabits sheltered estuaries, seagrass meadows, sponge gardens, soft corals, and artificial marine structures. Unlike many tropical seahorses associated with coral reefs, this species is adapted to temperate coastal environments, relying on complex underwater habitats for shelter, feeding, and breeding. Its colour varies from pale cream to yellow, brown, pink, and reddish tones, allowing it to blend remarkably well with its surroundings.
Like all seahorses, White's Seahorse is an ambush predator, feeding on tiny crustaceans that drift within reach of its elongated snout. Males carry fertilised eggs within a specialised brood pouch until fully developed young are released into the surrounding habitat. This unique reproductive strategy, combined with their gentle nature and remarkable camouflage, has made White's Seahorse one of Australia's most iconic temperate marine species and an enduring symbol of the biodiversity found within the nation's sheltered coastal waters.
