PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Nursery Shallows celebrates the quiet bond between mother and calf within the sheltered coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific. Beneath a crystal-clear turquoise sea, a mature Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin leads her young through a tranquil lagoon, their bodies illuminated by warm shafts of sunlight filtering gently through the surface above. Swimming close beneath its mother's pectoral fin, the calf follows effortlessly in her slipstream, creating a portrait of trust, protection, and learning.
Soft ribbons of refracted light ripple across the dolphins' silver-grey skin, revealing the mother's distinctive speckled underside while highlighting the smooth contours of the calf. Around them, small schools of silvery fish drift through the water column as seagrass meadows sway gently across the sandy seabed, punctuated by scattered coral outcrops that add texture and colour to the peaceful scene. The Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops aduncus)
The Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin inhabits the warm coastal waters of the Indian and western Pacific Oceans, ranging from East Africa to Australia, Southeast Asia, Japan, and the islands of the western Pacific. Unlike its larger relative, the Common Bottlenose Dolphin, this species is generally smaller, possesses a more slender rostrum, and develops distinctive dark speckling across its pale belly as it matures.
One of its most remarkable characteristics is the prolonged care given to each calf. Young dolphins remain closely associated with their mothers for four to six years, learning where to feed, how to navigate complex coastal habitats, recognise predators, and interact within dolphin society. During this period calves frequently swim in the mother's slipstream, conserving energy while remaining safely alongside her. This extended period of learning reflects the species' advanced intelligence and complex social structure, with knowledge passed from one generation to the next through experience rather than instinct alone.

Unlike many oceanic dolphins, Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins spend almost their entire lives within shallow coastal habitats where human activity is concentrated. Their preference for sheltered bays, estuaries, lagoons, and reef systems places them in direct contact with expanding coastal communities, making the conservation of local populations particularly important.
Many populations occupy relatively small home ranges and show strong site fidelity, often remaining within the same coastal region for many years. This means that habitat loss in a single estuary or bay can have lasting consequences for an entire resident community. Conservation programs increasingly focus on protecting these critical nursery habitats through improved marine spatial planning, responsible tourism management, fisheries regulation, and long-term population monitoring. Across much of the species' range, safeguarding healthy seagrass meadows, coral reefs, mangrove forests, and coastal water quality is now recognised as one of the most effective ways to secure the future of this highly specialised coastal dolphin.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
