PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Night Climber captures the quiet confidence of one of Australia's most familiar nocturnal residents. High within a mist-draped eucalyptus forest, a Common Brushtail Possum pauses on a moss-covered branch, illuminated by soft moonlight filtering through the canopy above. The diagonal sweep of the branch draws the eye directly to the possum's alert expression, while the surrounding forest dissolves into layers of cool blue-grey haze.
Dew-covered gum leaves hang overhead, and tiny droplets glimmer in the night air, creating an atmosphere of stillness and mystery. The contrast between the possum's dense silver-grey coat and the dark brush of its tail highlights the elegance of a species perfectly adapted to life among the treetops. Every element of the composition reflects the hidden rhythm of the Australian bush after dark, celebrating an animal whose nightly movements quietly unfold while the forest sleeps.

The Common Brushtail Possum (Trichosurus vulpecula)
Is Australia's largest and most widespread possum, occupying habitats ranging from tall forests and open woodlands to coastal heath, farmland, suburban gardens, and city parks. Highly adaptable and remarkably intelligent, Brushtail Possums have successfully coexisted with changing Australian landscapes for thousands of years. Their powerful climbing abilities are supported by sharp curved claws, flexible limbs, and a partially prehensile tail that provides balance while moving confidently through the forest canopy.
Primarily nocturnal, Brushtail Possums emerge soon after dusk to forage on leaves, flowers, fruits, fungi, bark, and occasionally insects or small vertebrates. During daylight hours they shelter inside tree hollows, fallen logs, rock crevices, or even roof spaces where natural hollows have disappeared. Females raise a single joey within the pouch before carrying it on their back as it gradually learns to climb, forage, and navigate the complex network of branches that forms its lifelong home.
Unlike many native marsupials that avoid human settlement, the Common Brushtail Possum has become one of Australia's most recognisable wildlife neighbours. Its adaptability has allowed it to flourish in many urban environments while still retaining the instincts and behaviours developed within native forests. This artwork celebrates that enduring resilience, portraying the Brushtail Possum as both a familiar suburban visitor and an accomplished climber whose true home remains the moonlit canopy.

The Common Brushtail Possum is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List and is not listed as threatened under Australia's national environmental legislation. It remains widespread across much of mainland Australia and Tasmania, occupying an exceptionally broad range of habitats from native forests and woodlands to agricultural districts and urban environments. Its adaptability has enabled the species to persist where many other native mammals have declined.
Despite its overall security, local populations continue to face a range of pressures. The loss of mature hollow-bearing trees through land clearing, forestry practices, and urban development reduces essential nesting sites, while habitat fragmentation can isolate populations and restrict movement. Vehicle collisions, attacks by domestic pets, and severe bushfires also contribute to mortality in some regions, particularly where natural habitat has become increasingly fragmented.
Conservation efforts focus on protecting native vegetation, retaining hollow-bearing trees, restoring habitat connectivity, and encouraging wildlife-sensitive urban planning. Artificial nest boxes and rehabilitation programs also provide valuable support where natural shelter has been lost. As an important browser, seed disperser, and familiar ambassador for Australia's nocturnal wildlife, the Common Brushtail Possum continues to play a significant role in maintaining healthy forest ecosystems while reminding people of the rich biodiversity that exists alongside everyday life.
