PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Mother's Meadow is a tender celebration of family, guidance, and quiet devotion beneath the tranquil waters of northern Australia. Within a vibrant seagrass meadow, a mother dugong and her calf feed side by side, moving slowly across the sandy seabed as soft shafts of sunlight stream through the crystal-clear water above. Delicate ripples of refracted light dance across their broad bodies, while gentle clouds of disturbed sand rise around them, revealing the careful grazing that sustains both the animals and the underwater meadow itself.
The heart of the composition lies in the close bond between mother and calf. The Dugong (Dugong dugon)
Few marine mammals invest as much time in raising a single offspring as the dugong. After a gestation of around thirteen to fourteen months, a mother usually gives birth to one calf, which remains closely beside her for up to two years and may continue associating with her for much longer. During this time the calf learns where productive seagrass meadows occur, how to forage efficiently, and the seasonal movements that allow dugongs to survive in changing coastal environments.
The relationship extends well beyond nourishment. Young dugongs frequently swim tucked alongside their mother's body, gaining protection while gradually developing the strength and experience needed for independence. Because females produce calves only every three to seven years, each offspring represents a significant investment in the future of the population.
Northern Australia's vast sheltered bays provide some of the safest nursery habitats remaining for the species. The Mother's Meadow celebrates this enduring bond between parent and calf, revealing how knowledge, protection and patience are passed from one generation to the next beneath the quiet waters of Australia's tropical coast.

Dugongs reproduce very slowly, making population recovery a lengthy process even when threats are reduced. Females mature relatively late, produce only a single calf at a time, and may wait several years before breeding again. As a result, the survival of adult females and calves is especially important to the long-term health of every population.

Seasonal management of boating activity, careful planning of coastal development, monitoring of important calving areas, and collaboration with Indigenous ranger groups all help reduce disturbance during this vulnerable stage of the dugong's life cycle.
