The Mangrove Cruiser celebrates the quiet elegance of one of Australia's most specialised and least-known coastal dolphins. A solitary Australian Humpback Dolphin glides effortlessly through crystal-clear estuarine waters, its streamlined body illuminated by warm shafts of afternoon sunlight filtering through the surface above. Soft ribbons of refracted light dance across its pale grey skin, revealing subtle rake scars and weathered markings that hint at years spent navigating the sheltered waterways of Australia's tropical north.
Below, a mosaic of seagrass meadows, sandy seabed, and scattered coral outcrops creates a rich coastal landscape, while small schools of fish drift through the clear water. Dense mangrove forests line the shoreline beyond, their submerged roots forming a natural refuge that frames the dolphin's journey without overwhelming the composition. The Australian Humpback Dolphin (Sousa sahulensis)
The Australian Humpback Dolphin was formally recognised as a distinct species in 2014, making it one of the most recently described dolphin species in the world. Endemic to northern Australia and the coastal waters of southern New Guinea, it occupies shallow tropical environments that include estuaries, mangrove-lined creeks, sheltered bays, and tidal channels.
Unlike many oceanic dolphins that form large travelling pods, Australian Humpback Dolphins usually live in small social groups with relatively small home ranges. Their long, slender rostrums and flexible swimming style allow them to manoeuvre efficiently through narrow waterways while searching for fish, squid, and crustaceans. Individuals often carry distinctive scars acquired through social interactions and movement among submerged timber, mangrove roots, and rocky coastal habitats. Because each local population remains closely associated with particular stretches of coastline, these dolphins have become one of Australia's most specialised marine mammals, perfectly adapted to life within the country's intricate network of tropical coastal ecosystems.

Researchers continue to study population size, movement patterns, and genetic diversity to better understand how individual groups are connected. Across northern Australia, conservation efforts increasingly focus on protecting entire coastal ecosystems rather than the dolphins alone, recognising that healthy mangroves, seagrass meadows, tidal creeks, and estuaries are all essential to their survival.
