The Brahma (Gallus gallus domesticus) is one of the world's most iconic heritage poultry breeds, renowned for its immense size, dignified bearing, and remarkable history. Although its ancestry traces to large feather-legged fowl imported from Asia during the mid-nineteenth century, the breed was carefully refined in the United States, where breeders developed the imposing bird now recognised as the Brahma. Its exceptional stature quickly earned widespread admiration, and by the latter half of the nineteenth century it had become one of the most important meat-producing chickens in North America, celebrated for both its practicality and impressive appearance.
Often known as the "King of All Poultry," the Brahma became a symbol of agricultural achievement during an era when larger, more productive livestock were highly valued. Its broad frame, dense plumage, and distinctive feathered legs set it apart from other domestic breeds, while its commanding presence made it a favourite at agricultural exhibitions as well as on working farms. This artwork celebrates the historical rise of the Brahma, portraying a breed whose extraordinary size and quiet dignity secured its place among the great achievements of nineteenth-century poultry breeding.
