PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Last Sentinels portrays a peaceful gathering of Red-tailed Black Cockatoos as evening settles across the Australian woodland. In the foreground, one bird stands quietly watchful while its companion carefully manipulates a native seed pod with remarkable dexterity, using its powerful beak and foot to extract the nutritious kernels hidden within. Behind them, other members of the flock fade into the warm haze of sunset, their silhouettes dissolving among fallen timber and towering eucalypts as the last light filters through the trees.
The composition celebrates the quieter rhythms of bush life, where feeding, vigilance, and companionship unfold in harmony with the landscape. Rich charcoal plumage is illuminated by subtle bronze highlights, while flashes of crimson tail feathers provide vivid accents against weathered logs and golden leaf litter. Red-tailed Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii)
Red-tailed Black Cockatoos are highly specialised seed feeders, equipped with exceptionally powerful bills capable of opening some of Australia's hardest native seed pods. Their diet includes the seeds of eucalypts, banksias, sheoaks (Casuarina and Allocasuarina), wattles, and a variety of other native trees and shrubs, making them important participants in woodland ecosystems.
Unlike many parrots that feed quickly, Red-tailed Black Cockatoos often spend extended periods methodically working through cones and seed pods, holding food securely with one foot while carefully extracting each seed. Outside the breeding season they frequently gather in small flocks, moving across the landscape in search of seasonal food resources. Their slow wingbeats, resonant calls, and striking crimson tail panels have made them one of the most distinctive and recognisable birds of the Australian bush.

While widespread northern populations remain secure, several southern populations continue to decline because of habitat loss and changes to native woodland ecosystems. The removal of feeding habitat, particularly mature stands of sheoaks, banksias, and eucalypts, reduces the reliable food sources these specialised parrots require throughout the year.
Their naturally slow breeding cycle, combined with the ongoing loss of nesting hollows, makes recovery difficult for vulnerable populations.
Conservation programs now focus on protecting remnant woodlands, restoring native food plants, preserving old hollow-bearing trees, and improving breeding habitat. These efforts are helping ensure that the unmistakable calls and brilliant crimson flashes of the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo remain part of Australia's woodland landscapes for generations to come.
