The Island Local presents an intimate portrait of one of Australia's most celebrated marsupials within the rugged beauty of its coastal home. Pausing among weathered limestone, wind-shaped shrubs and scattered dune vegetation, the quokka stands quietly against a backdrop of turquoise ocean and distant shoreline. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Quokka (Setonix brachyurus)
Today, the quokka is most closely associated with Rottnest Island, but this small macropod once occupied a much broader area of south-western Western Australia. Fossil evidence and historical records show that populations were once widespread across the mainland before habitat loss and introduced predators caused a dramatic decline.
Island populations survived because they remained largely free from foxes and other introduced predators that devastated mainland wildlife. Over time, quokkas adapted to living among coastal heathlands, limestone outcrops and dense shrublands, where they are able to conserve water and feed on a wide variety of native vegetation.
Their approachable nature and distinctive appearance have made the quokka one of Australia's best-known wildlife ambassadors. For many visitors, it provides a memorable introduction to the extraordinary biodiversity found along Western Australia's coastline.

Researchers continue to monitor both island and mainland populations, using long-term surveys to better understand breeding success, genetic diversity and the effects of environmental change. Habitat restoration, careful fire management and ongoing predator control are helping strengthen populations in suitable areas of the mainland.

As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
