The Hidden Puggle offers a rare glimpse into one of Australia's most secluded nurseries, where a young echidna rests safely within the shelter of an underground burrow. Curving tree roots frame the entrance above, while dry leaves, moss and rich earth create a warm, protective nest beneath the forest floor. Soft natural light reaches gently into the chamber, illuminating the tiny animal without disturbing the quiet stillness of its hidden refuge.
The close composition draws attention to the puggle's delicate features, from its developing spines and soft fur to its small claws curled protectively beneath its body. Warm browns, muted greens and earthy reds reflect the colours of the surrounding woodland, while the gentle lighting emphasises the sense of security provided by the burrow. The Short-beaked Echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus)
The early life of an echidna is unlike that of almost any other Australian mammal. After laying a single leathery egg, the female carries it in a temporary pouch where it hatches about ten days later. The tiny newborn, known as a puggle, remains in the pouch for several weeks while feeding on milk produced through specialised patches of skin rather than nipples.
As the puggle's spines begin to develop, the mother transfers it to a carefully prepared nursery burrow for protection. She returns every few days to feed her young before sealing the entrance again and leaving to forage. This reduces the chances of predators discovering the burrow while allowing the puggle to grow safely underground.
After several months, the young echidna is ready to emerge and begin an independent life, continuing a reproductive strategy that has endured for millions of years.

The survival of young echidnas depends on secure nesting sites and healthy surrounding habitats. Although adult echidnas are well protected by their spines, puggles remain vulnerable while confined to nursery burrows, relying entirely on their mothers during the early months of life.
Disturbance from land clearing, severe bushfires, introduced predators and domestic dogs can affect breeding success by reducing suitable nesting areas or disrupting females while they are raising young. Wildlife carers also regularly assist orphaned or injured echidnas following vehicle strikes and fire events, helping return rehabilitated animals to the wild where possible.
Protecting mature bushland, fallen timber and natural ground cover provides the sheltered environments that echidnas need to reproduce successfully. Continued monitoring, habitat conservation and community awareness help ensure that this ancient monotreme continues to raise future generations across Australia's diverse landscapes.
