PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Hidden Hollow offers an intimate glimpse into the secret daytime refuge of one of Australia's most enchanting microbats. Framed by the weathered interior of an ancient tree hollow, a Lesser Long-eared Bat cautiously peers toward the outside world as warm light spills across the rough timber walls. The glowing backlight reveals the delicate network of veins within its oversized ears while illuminating every strand of soft grey fur against the rich textures of aged wood.
The hollow itself becomes as important as its tiny occupant. Deep fissures, worn bark and drifting dust particles speak of a shelter that has formed slowly over many decades, providing safety within an ever-changing forest. Rather than depicting the excitement of the nightly hunt, the composition celebrates the quiet importance of refuge, reminding the viewer that even the smallest forest residents depend upon ancient trees for their survival.

The Lesser Long-eared Bat (Nyctophilus geoffroyi)
For much of each day, the Lesser Long-eared Bat remains hidden within natural shelters where it rests safely until dusk. Individuals usually roost alone or in small groups beneath loose bark, inside tree hollows, rock crevices and occasionally within old buildings. These secluded refuges protect the bats from predators, temperature extremes and harsh weather.
Among these shelters, hollow-bearing trees are particularly important. Suitable hollows often require many decades, and sometimes well over a century, to develop naturally as trees mature. These cavities provide secure roosting sites where bats can conserve energy, shelter during unfavourable weather, and raise their young.
The species possesses another remarkable adaptation while resting. Its oversized ears can be folded backwards beneath the forearms, helping reduce heat loss and making the bat less conspicuous within its shelter. This artwork celebrates the hidden world inside Australia's ancient trees and the remarkable relationship between mature forests and the wildlife that depends upon them.

The Lesser Long-eared Bat (Nyctophilus geoffroyi) is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List and is not listed as threatened under Australia's national environmental legislation. While the species remains widespread, its long-term success depends upon the continued availability of suitable daytime roosts throughout the landscape.
One of the greatest challenges facing many microbats is the gradual loss of mature hollow-bearing trees through land clearing, forestry activities and urban development. Because suitable hollows take many decades to form, they cannot be quickly replaced once removed. The loss of these natural shelters affects not only bats but also countless birds, reptiles and arboreal mammals that share the same habitat.
Protecting old-growth trees, retaining hollow-bearing vegetation during land management, and providing artificial roost boxes where appropriate all contribute to healthier bat populations. These measures help preserve the intricate web of forest life that depends upon Australia's oldest trees, ensuring future generations continue to benefit from the ecological services provided by these remarkable nocturnal mammals.
