The Hidden Clutch reveals a peaceful scene seldom witnessed, offering an intimate glimpse into the hidden world beneath the meadow grasses at dawn. The Texas A&M Quail (Coturnix japonica) the Texas A&M Quail is a specialised strain of the Japanese Quail developed during the twentieth century through selective breeding at Texas A&M University. Researchers sought to produce a larger-bodied bird with distinctive white plumage while preserving the exceptional fertility, rapid growth, and productivity that had already made Japanese Quail valuable throughout the world. The resulting strain became instantly recognisable for its soft ivory-white feathers, calm temperament, and suitability for both research and agricultural production.
The white plumage results from carefully selected genetic traits that distinguish the Texas A&M strain from the traditional wild-type colouring of the Japanese Quail. In addition to its agricultural value, the strain has contributed significantly to scientific studies involving genetics, nutrition, reproduction, and poultry management, making it one of the most influential modern quail lines. Today it remains highly regarded by homesteaders, breeders, and researchers alike.
