PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Forest Listener captures the quiet concentration of one of Australia's most specialised woodland hunters. Perched upon a moss-covered branch deep within the forest understory, a Lesser Long-eared Bat pauses before beginning its nightly search for prey. Its remarkably oversized ears are held forward in perfect attention, listening for the faintest movement among the surrounding foliage while soft shafts of evening light filter through the trees. Tiny insects drift lazily through the woodland air, hinting at the activity that will soon unfold as darkness settles across the forest.
Weathered bark, rich mosses, and native shrubs create a richly textured setting that reflects the complexity of the bat's preferred habitat. Rather than portraying speed or flight, the composition celebrates patience and precision, revealing the stillness that precedes every successful hunt. The Lesser Long-eared Bat (Nyctophilus geoffroyi)
The Lesser Long-eared Bat is one of Australia's most distinctive microbats, recognised by its exceptionally large ears and gentle, slow-flying nature. Found across much of mainland Australia and Tasmania, it inhabits forests, woodlands, heathlands and shrublands where dense vegetation provides ideal hunting habitat. Unlike many fast-flying bats that pursue insects in open air, this species has evolved to forage among branches, foliage and tree trunks.
Its large ears allow it to detect the faint sounds produced by insects moving across leaves, bark and vegetation, enabling a specialised hunting technique known as gleaning. Using a combination of sensitive hearing, echolocation and excellent manoeuvrability, the bat can hover briefly before picking insects directly from surfaces that other bats often ignore.
This remarkable adaptation allows the Lesser Long-eared Bat to occupy a unique ecological niche within Australia's forests. By exploiting prey hidden among vegetation, it reduces competition with other insect-eating bats while helping maintain the balance of woodland ecosystems through natural insect control.

The Lesser Long-eared Bat (Nyctophilus geoffroyi) is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List and is not listed as threatened under Australia's national environmental legislation. The species remains widespread across a broad range of habitats and is considered relatively secure throughout much of its distribution.
Although populations are generally stable, local declines can occur where native woodland is cleared, mature trees are removed, or inappropriate fire regimes reduce the dense vegetation on which the species depends for foraging. Disturbance of roost sites and predation by introduced cats may also affect local populations in fragmented landscapes.
Conservation efforts focus on retaining native woodland structure, protecting mature vegetation, and managing forests in ways that preserve diverse understorey habitats. By maintaining healthy woodland ecosystems, these measures help support the Lesser Long-eared Bat while preserving one of Australia's most effective natural controllers of nocturnal insects.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
