Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae)
Among the world's birds, few species display parental roles as remarkable as those of the emu. After the female lays her clutch, the male assumes full responsibility for incubation, remaining on the nest for approximately fifty-six days. During this period he rarely eats, drinks, or leaves the eggs, surviving largely on stored body reserves while protecting the developing chicks.
The eggs themselves are among the most distinctive in the avian world. Their thick shells are coated with a deep green outer layer that provides effective camouflage amongst grasses, leaf litter, and dappled shade. Once incubation begins, the father's unwavering commitment ensures the eggs remain at a stable temperature until hatching, giving the next generation the greatest possible chance of survival.

Conservation programs increasingly recognise the importance of protecting breeding sites during the nesting season. Predator control, responsible land management, and retaining native vegetation all improve nesting success while reducing unnecessary disturbance to incubating birds.
