PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Desert Claypan captures the remarkable resilience of the Zebra Finch as a lively flock gathers around a small outback waterhole at the close of the day. Beneath the warm glow of the afternoon sun, birds perch on weathered branches, queue along the muddy edge to drink, and sweep overhead in swift, coordinated flight. Fine dust hangs in the still air, softening the surrounding landscape of red earth, native grasses, and scattered mulga shrubs.
Despite the harshness of their environment, the scene is filled with movement and quiet vitality. Each bird contributes to the rhythm of the flock, illustrating the strong social bonds that help the species survive Australia's unpredictable interior. The broad composition draws the eye across dozens of individual interactions while emphasising the importance of water within the arid landscape. The Desert Claypan celebrates one of Australia's most enduring desert birds and the fleeting moments of abundance that sustain life across the outback.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia guttata)
The Zebra Finch is one of Australia's best-known native finches, occupying much of the continent's arid and semi-arid interior. Closely associated with grasslands, shrublands, and open woodlands, these highly social birds travel in flocks that move across the landscape in search of seeding grasses and reliable water. Their nomadic lifestyle allows them to respond quickly to changing environmental conditions, particularly after rainfall.
Males are instantly recognised by their bright orange-red bills, chestnut cheek patches, black-and-white barred throats, and spotted flanks, while females display more subdued markings. Zebra Finches breed opportunistically whenever favourable conditions arise, often raising young soon after rain stimulates fresh plant growth. Their adaptability, cooperative flock behaviour, and ability to thrive in some of Australia's most demanding environments have made them one of the defining bird species of the inland.

CONSERVATION INFORMATION.

This design donates to animal and conservation efforts
The Zebra Finch is currently classified as Least Concern and remains abundant across much of Australia's arid and semi-arid regions. Its flexible, nomadic lifestyle and rapid breeding response to seasonal rainfall have enabled populations to remain healthy despite the naturally variable conditions of the inland.
Although the species is secure, Zebra Finches rely on functioning desert ecosystems that provide native grasses, seed resources, and dependable water sources. Habitat degradation around permanent waterholes, overgrazing, invasive plant species, and prolonged drought associated with climate change can reduce the quality of these important habitats. Protecting native grasslands, maintaining natural water systems, and conserving healthy arid landscapes will help ensure these resilient finches continue to flourish. The Zebra Finch remains a powerful symbol of Australia's outback, demonstrating how cooperation, adaptability, and careful use of scarce resources allow wildlife to prosper in one of the world's most challenging environments.
