The Chocolate Wanderer captures the understated elegance of the Havana Rabbit as it pauses among clover, moss, and weathered woodland timber in a peaceful meadow setting. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Havana Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus)
The Havana Rabbit originated in the Netherlands during the late nineteenth century, where breeders developed a compact rabbit distinguished by its unusually rich brown coat. Despite its name, the breed has no connection with Cuba. Instead, its deep chocolate colouring reminded early fanciers of the rich tones associated with Havana cigars, giving rise to the name that has remained with the breed ever since.
Although the original chocolate variety remains the breed's defining colour, selective breeding has since established additional recognised varieties, including blue, black, and broken patterns in some breeding standards. Regardless of colour, the Havana is recognised for its compact body, fine bone structure, and exceptionally smooth, glossy coat, which is judged as much for its depth of colour as for its even texture and lustre. Combined with its gentle temperament and balanced conformation, these qualities have secured the Havana Rabbit's enduring place as a respected exhibition breed and a much-loved companion animal.
