PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Canopy Embrace presents a quiet portrait of protection and trust within a flowering eucalyptus forest. Suspended securely from a slender branch, a Black Flying-fox mother folds her broad wings around a young pup resting against her body. The adult’s curved claws hold firmly above while the pup looks outward from the shelter of her fur, remaining closely supported as the colony rests around them.
Soft morning light filters through pale blossoms and silver-green foliage, illuminating the thin wing membranes with a warm translucent glow. Deep black fur and the reddish-brown mantle across the mother’s shoulders contrast with the light-filled forest, while distant flying-foxes hang quietly among the surrounding branches. Droplets cling to leaves and blossoms, adding freshness to the peaceful scene. The close composition keeps the bond between mother and young at its centre, offering a rare glimpse of the care that unfolds high within a busy roost while the forest settles into daylight.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Black Flying-fox (Pteropus alecto)
Despite their impressive size and long nightly journeys, Black Flying-foxes begin life entirely dependent upon maternal care. Females generally raise a single pup, allowing the mother to invest considerable time and energy in its development. During the earliest stage, the newborn clings securely to her chest, sheltered by her body and wings.
When the pup is very small, the mother may carry it during feeding flights. As it grows heavier, it remains within the camp while she travels in search of food, joining other dependent young in the roost. The mother later returns to nurse and protect her pup, recognising it among many others through calls, scent and close physical contact.
Over several months, the young flying-fox strengthens its wings, practises climbing and begins making short flights within the canopy. Only after learning to fly and locate food can it become independent. This extended period of care reveals the strong family relationships that support the next generation of one of Australia’s most important forest pollinators.

CONSERVATION INFORMATION.

This design donates to animal and conservation efforts
Although Black Flying-fox populations remain relatively secure, mothers and dependent pups are especially vulnerable during extreme heat. Flying-foxes roost openly within the canopy, where intense temperatures can overwhelm their ability to remain cool. Heat stress begins during very hot weather and can lead to large numbers of deaths when temperatures become extreme.
Mothers may fan their wings, lick their bodies or move toward lower and more shaded branches in an attempt to cool themselves and their young. Pups are particularly at risk because they cannot regulate their temperature as effectively or leave the camp independently. Heat-related mortality can become even more severe during drought or food shortage, when animals are already under physical stress.
Conservation responses include monitoring camps during heatwaves, retaining dense shade and nearby water, and supporting trained wildlife carers when intervention is appropriate. Protecting large, well-vegetated roosts gives mothers and young access to different levels of shade and airflow. These measures improve breeding success while helping the colony withstand the increasingly severe weather affecting many Australian landscapes.
