PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Bush Wanderer follows one of Australia's most enduring native mammals as it moves steadily across the floor of a sunlit eucalypt woodland. Surrounded by weathered granite, fallen gum leaves and patches of soft green moss, the Short-beaked Echidna explores the forest with quiet determination. Warm shafts of afternoon light filter through the towering trees, illuminating the woodland floor and creating a peaceful setting that reflects the calm rhythm of life within the Australian bush.
The low perspective draws attention to the echidna's distinctive form, from its powerful digging claws and elongated snout to the dense covering of fur and protective spines that catch the golden light. Earthy browns, muted greens and soft ochres echo the colours of the surrounding landscape, while the blurred woodland beyond provides a gentle sense of depth without distracting from the animal itself. The Short-beaked Echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus)
The Short-beaked Echidna belongs to one of the oldest groups of living mammals on Earth. Together with the platypus, it is one of only five surviving monotreme species, mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young. This remarkable lineage dates back millions of years, preserving characteristics that have largely disappeared from other mammals.
Despite its ancient origins, the echidna is exceptionally well adapted to modern Australia. It occurs in almost every habitat across the continent, from alpine regions and temperate forests to deserts and coastal heathlands. Its long snout contains specialised receptors that help detect tiny electrical signals produced by ants and termites beneath the soil, allowing it to locate prey hidden from view.
Combined with powerful claws for digging and a long, sticky tongue for feeding, these adaptations have enabled the echidna to thrive in environments that challenge many other species.

Although the Short-beaked Echidna remains widespread across Australia and is considered secure overall, healthy populations still depend on well-managed natural habitats. Land clearing, habitat fragmentation and expanding road networks have increased the number of vehicle strikes, particularly in areas where bushland is divided by major roads.
Introduced predators, including foxes, cats and domestic dogs, can threaten young or vulnerable animals, while increasingly frequent bushfires and prolonged droughts may reduce food availability and alter habitat quality. Local populations, such as those on Kangaroo Island, face additional pressures because of their isolation and exposure to major fire events.
Conservation efforts focus on protecting native habitat, improving wildlife crossings, supporting rehabilitation programs and monitoring populations across different regions. The echidna reminds us that even species regarded as common benefit from ongoing conservation, helping ensure they remain a familiar part of Australia's landscapes for generations to come.

As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
