PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Belted Gathering celebrates the quiet companionship of a small Belted Galloway herd as they share a flower-rich meadow beneath the warm light of a summer afternoon. Scattered naturally across the pasture, each animal contributes its own quiet moment to the scene: one meets the viewer with a calm, attentive gaze, another lowers its head to graze among the clover and buttercups, while two companions pause together in a gentle exchange. Their iconic white belts form a graceful visual rhythm against the deep black coats, drawing the eye through the composition toward the softly lit countryside beyond. Mature trees, weathered fence posts, and a distant stone farmhouse settle into a golden haze, creating a landscape steeped in rural tradition.
Rather than focusing on a single subject, the artwork celebrates the social nature of the breed and the peaceful harmony of life within the herd. Warm evening sunlight enriches the meadow with shades of emerald, gold, and soft wildflower colour, while the surrounding landscape provides a timeless backdrop that feels both welcoming and authentic. The composition conveys a quiet sense of belonging, where cattle, pasture, and countryside exist in effortless balance. The result is a portrait of traditional farming life that honours the Belted Galloway not only for its unmistakable appearance, but also for its gentle temperament and enduring place within Britain's pastoral heritage.
ABOUT THIS COLLECTION
#aboutThisCollection
BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Belted Galloway (Bos taurus) originated in the historic county of Galloway in southwestern Scotland, where generations of farmers developed cattle capable of thriving in the region's cool, wet climate and rugged grazing country. Descended from the ancient Galloway breed, the Belted Galloway is distinguished by the broad white band encircling its body, a naturally inherited colour pattern that has made it one of Britain's most recognisable heritage cattle breeds. Beneath its striking appearance lies remarkable practicality. Its dense double coat provides excellent insulation, allowing the breed to withstand harsh winters while efficiently converting rough pasture into productive grazing. Calm, hardy, and long-lived, Belted Galloways have remained closely associated with traditional low-input farming systems. This artwork celebrates a breed whose enduring character reflects centuries of adaptation to Scotland's pastoral landscapes.
