The Afghan Hound is one of the world's oldest recognised dog breeds, with a heritage that reaches back thousands of years to the rugged mountains and high deserts of present-day Afghanistan and neighbouring regions of Central Asia. Developed in some of the harshest landscapes on Earth, the breed was prized by nomadic peoples for its remarkable speed, agility, and keen eyesight, enabling it to pursue swift game such as hare and gazelle across rocky valleys and steep mountain passes. Its long, flowing coat was not simply ornamental but provided essential protection against the region's cold winters, strong winds, and dramatic changes in temperature.
These ancient adaptations remain evident throughout the breed's life. Afghan Hound puppies quickly display the curiosity and athleticism that hint at their future grace, while adults develop the powerful stride, flowing coat, and effortless elegance that have become synonymous with the breed.
