PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Abyssal Pillars enters a still, blue world where a group of sperm whales rests upright just beneath the ocean’s surface. Their immense bodies hang vertically through the water column, heads raised towards the light and tails descending into deeper shades of cobalt. Arranged at varying distances, the whales form a series of dark, living columns, while a smaller individual remains close among the adults.
Sunlight filters through the rippled surface in narrow beams, scattering pale reflections across scarred grey skin and softly defining each whale against the surrounding water. The central figure provides the strongest focal point, its broad head and immense length anchoring the symmetrical gathering. Beyond it, partially obscured whales recede into the blue, extending the scene beyond what can be seen.
Almost complete stillness shapes the atmosphere. With no seabed or coastline to interrupt the view, the whales appear suspended between the luminous surface and the darkening depths below, creating a quiet portrait of closeness, scale and shared repose.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Sperm Whale (Physeter macrocephalus)
Female sperm whales and their young live within enduring social units, often maintaining close relationships across many years. These groups cooperate in caring for calves, remain together while travelling and feeding, and communicate through patterned sequences of clicks called codas. Particular combinations of rhythm and timing are shared within broader cultural clans, creating recognisable vocal traditions that can persist across generations.
One of their most unusual behaviours occurs during short resting periods near the surface. Whales may slow their movements and assume an upright position, remaining almost motionless with their heads raised through the water column. Several members of a social unit can rest in this way at the same time, producing the striking vertical formations shown here. These episodes occupy only a small proportion of the day, reflecting the limited sleep recorded in the species. Although the whales appear inactive, their close formation reveals another dimension of a society built upon long-term association, communication and knowledge passed between generations.

Industrial whaling profoundly altered sperm whale populations and their social structure. For centuries, the species was pursued for oil and spermaceti, with large mature males particularly prized by whalers. Hunting continued well into the twentieth century, removing vast numbers of animals before international regulation brought commercial exploitation largely to an end. Global population size and the pace of recovery remain difficult to determine because sperm whales range across immense, deep-water habitats, and no recent comprehensive assessment exists for every ocean basin.

Their slow reproduction places natural limits on recovery. Females produce calves at long intervals, and the survival of each young whale depends upon years of care within its social unit. The loss of experienced adults can therefore affect more than population numbers; it may also remove knowledge used in navigation, communication and raising young. Protecting stable family groups and maintaining long-term international monitoring remain essential to rebuilding populations diminished by whaling.
