Stained Glass Wings celebrates the remarkable beauty of the Eastern Rosella as a small gathering moves through the dappled light of an Australian woodland. Perched among weathered eucalyptus branches, native grasses, and delicate ferns, the birds illuminate the forest with brilliant scarlet heads, golden-yellow breasts, emerald-green highlights, and deep sapphire-blue wings. A confident rosella in the foreground meets the viewer's gaze while its companions forage among blossoms and exchange quiet interactions beneath the morning canopy.
Soft shafts of sunlight filter through towering gums, catching drifting dust motes that shimmer like tiny flecks of gold. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
Eastern Rosella (Platycercus eximius)
The Eastern Rosella is one of Australia's most familiar native parrots, occurring throughout south-eastern Australia and Tasmania in open forests, woodland edges, farmland, parks, and gardens. Although often seen feeding on the ground, it spends much of its day moving between shrubs and the forest canopy in search of seeds, fruits, blossoms, nectar, and insects.
Among its most distinctive features is the intricate patterning across the back and wings. Each feather is bordered with black, creating a finely scalloped appearance that resembles stained glass or carefully laid mosaic tiles when illuminated by sunlight. Males and females are similar in appearance and commonly travel in pairs or small family groups, maintaining long-term pair bonds. Their graceful undulating flight and soft, musical whistles have become familiar sounds throughout much of their range, making the Eastern Rosella one of Australia's most admired woodland parrots.

The Eastern Rosella remains widespread and secure across mainland Australia, where populations are generally stable and well adapted to a variety of natural and modified landscapes. Open woodland, farmland, forest edges, and suburban parks all provide suitable habitat when mature trees and reliable food sources are available.
The outlook is less secure for some regional populations. The Tasmanian subspecies (Platycercus eximius diemenensis) is listed as Near Threatened, reflecting long-term population declines. Across its range, the species relies on mature trees containing natural hollows for nesting, making the retention of old-growth woodland an important conservation priority. Competition for nesting sites from introduced species, together with the continued loss of hollow-bearing trees, can also affect local breeding success. Protecting mature forests and woodland habitats will help ensure these brilliantly coloured parrots continue to brighten Australia's landscapes for generations to come.
