PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Spots in the Sunset captures a rare encounter with one of Australia's most elusive native predators as it moves confidently through the fading light of the bush. A Spotted-tailed Quoll steps carefully across a weathered eucalyptus log, pausing for a brief moment as though listening to sounds beyond the woodland. Twisted roots, scattered stones and layers of dry leaf litter create a richly textured foreground, while tall gum trees dissolve into a warm haze of golden evening light.
The low sun illuminates the quoll's rich chestnut-brown coat, causing the bright white spots across its body and tail to stand out against the surrounding woodland colours. Fine details in its fur, whiskers and alert expression draw the viewer into the scene, while soft amber light filtering through the trees creates a calm atmosphere despite the animal's quiet readiness. The Spotted-tailed Quoll (Dasyurus maculatus)
The Spotted-tailed Quoll is the largest carnivorous marsupial remaining on mainland Australia. An agile and highly adaptable hunter, it moves confidently through forests, rocky escarpments and tree canopies in search of prey. Unlike Australia's introduced predators, the quoll evolved alongside native wildlife over millions of years and plays an important role in maintaining healthy forest ecosystems.
Its distinctive white spots cover not only the body but also the tail, making it the only Australian quoll with this unique pattern. Equipped with powerful jaws, sharp claws and excellent climbing ability, the species hunts a wide variety of animals, including insects, reptiles, birds and small mammals, while also feeding on carrion when the opportunity arises.
Although it is a skilled predator, the Spotted-tailed Quoll is naturally secretive and mostly active at night. Many Australians spend a lifetime exploring the bush without ever seeing one, making each encounter a memorable reminder that these remarkable native hunters still survive in our forests.

Although the Spotted-tailed Quoll still occurs across parts of eastern Australia and Tasmania, its distribution is now far more fragmented than it once was. Extensive clearing of native forests has reduced the connected habitats these wide-ranging predators depend upon, while roads increasingly divide remaining populations and contribute to accidental mortality.
Introduced Red Foxes and feral cats compete with quolls for food and may prey on young animals. In some areas, poisoning programs aimed at controlling invasive predators have also unintentionally affected quolls, despite measures designed to reduce these risks. Climate change and more frequent intense bushfires are creating additional pressures by altering forest habitats and reducing the availability of shelter and prey.
Conservation programs focus on protecting large, connected areas of native forest, restoring wildlife corridors, monitoring wild populations and reducing threats from invasive species. Ongoing research is improving our understanding of the species' ecology and helping guide recovery efforts. As one of Australia's last remaining native mammalian predators, the Spotted-tailed Quoll is an important indicator of healthy forest ecosystems, and protecting it benefits many other species that share the same habitat.
