Noble Dairy Queen captures an Anglo-Nubian doe standing with composed assurance in a broad, sunlit pasture. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Anglo-Nubian Goat (Capra hircus)
The Anglo-Nubian was developed in Britain during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by crossing established British goats with large, lop-eared animals brought from India, North Africa, and the Middle East. Some of these imported goats reached British ports aboard steamships, where they had supplied fresh milk during long voyages. Their pronounced facial profiles, pendulous ears, and tolerance of warm conditions became defining influences in the new breed, which was formally recorded in British herd books during the early twentieth century.
Unlike several European dairy breeds selected primarily for high volume, the Anglo-Nubian became valued for producing milk with comparatively high butterfat and protein levels. These qualities make it particularly suitable for cheese, yoghurt, and other cultured dairy foods. Its larger frame and useful fleshing ability also established it as a versatile, rather than narrowly specialised, farm animal.
The breed later spread widely through international export. Its ability to perform in warmer climates helped it become especially important in Australia and many tropical and subtropical regions, where it remains a prominent dairy and dual-purpose goat.
