PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Nectar’s Cradle presents an intimate portrait of maternal care within a flowering eucalyptus canopy. Suspended securely beneath a blossom-covered branch, a Little Red Flying-fox mother folds her wings around a tiny pup resting against her chest. Warm sunlight filters through the surrounding flowers and drifting pollen, illuminating the deep russet tones of the adult’s fur and the softer, almost translucent skin of her young.
The close composition separates the pair from the wider colony, whose hanging forms appear softly through the glowing woodland behind them.
Pale blossoms create a natural frame around the mother and pup, while suspended grains of pollen catch the light like fine golden dust. The mother’s curved claws hold firmly to the branch as the newborn presses close beneath the shelter of her body and folded wings. Texture and light guide the eye from the delicate eucalyptus flowers to the contrasting fur and wing membranes, capturing a private stage of life normally concealed high within a crowded roost.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Little Red Flying-fox (Pteropus scapulatus)
Little Red Flying-foxes usually produce a single pup, making each breeding season an important investment for the mother. The newborn is carried against her body, clinging firmly to the fur while being sheltered beneath her wings. During its earliest weeks, it depends completely upon her milk, warmth and protection.
The mother may carry the pup during feeding flights while it is very small. As it becomes heavier, she leaves it within the camp, where young flying-foxes gather while the adults forage. She returns after feeding to nurse her own pup, recognising it among the many young animals through sound and scent.
Over time, the pup strengthens its wings and begins practising the movements required for flight. Maternal care continues until it can forage independently and travel with the colony. This prolonged period of dependence reveals a quieter side of flying-fox life, in which the survival of a highly mobile pollinator begins with months of close protection within the roost.

Although Little Red Flying-foxes remain widespread, mothers and dependent pups are especially vulnerable during extreme heat events. Flying-foxes roost exposed within the canopy, and prolonged temperatures above 40°C can lead to severe heat stress and mass mortality. Pregnant and lactating females may be among the animals most affected because of the additional demands placed upon their bodies.
Heat-stressed mothers may lose their grip or become separated from pups, while young animals are less able to regulate their temperature or move toward cooler parts of the camp. Drought and food shortages can make these events more damaging by leaving adults in poorer condition before extreme weather arrives.
Conservation responses include monitoring camps during heatwaves, protecting shaded roost vegetation and supporting trained wildlife rescue groups when intervention is safe. Longer-term measures focus on retaining large, well-vegetated camps with varied canopy cover and nearby water. Protecting these places gives mothers and young the best opportunity to survive increasingly severe weather while preserving the next generation of Australia’s forest pollinators.
