Green Lightning captures one of the Australian outback's most extraordinary natural spectacles as a flock of wild Budgerigars converges upon a remote waterhole at the close of day. Perched among weathered branches, some birds pause to drink while others arrive in a blur of emerald wings and cobalt-blue tails, filling the warm evening air with restless movement. In the foreground, a budgerigar hovers above the water, scattering droplets that sparkle in the fading sunlight, while countless flockmates stream across the distant sky like living ribbons of green.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
Wild Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus)
Although known worldwide as a companion bird, the Budgerigar evolved within the vast grasslands and semi-arid landscapes of inland Australia. Wild budgerigars lead highly nomadic lives, travelling immense distances in response to rainfall rather than following fixed seasonal migrations. Their movements are guided by the appearance of fresh grasses, seeding plants, and temporary waterholes that may exist for only a short time before the landscape dries once again.
During favourable conditions, small flocks rapidly combine into spectacular gatherings that can number thousands or even millions of birds. These enormous flocks provide safety from predators while allowing individuals to locate food and water more efficiently across the immense inland plains. Unlike the many colour mutations bred in captivity, wild Budgerigars retain the classic green-and-yellow plumage that blends remarkably well with native grasses, offering effective camouflage despite their highly social lifestyle. Their ability to respond quickly to changing environmental conditions has made them one of Australia's most resilient and successful native parrots.

The Wild Budgerigar is currently classified as Least Concern and remains one of Australia's most abundant native bird species. Occupying much of the continent's arid and semi-arid interior, it has evolved to survive in an environment where rainfall, food, and surface water can change dramatically from year to year.
Rather than maintaining stable population numbers, Budgerigars naturally follow a remarkable cycle of expansion and decline. Extended droughts can greatly reduce flock sizes as food and water become scarce, while widespread rains trigger rapid breeding events that produce enormous nomadic flocks across the inland. This natural boom-and-bust cycle has sustained the species for thousands of years. Although populations remain secure, healthy native grasslands, intact inland ecosystems, and reliable natural water sources remain essential to their long-term success. Protecting these landscapes ensures that the spectacular movements of Australia's wild Budgerigars continue to animate the heart of the continent for generations to come.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
