Gems of the Grassland celebrates the remarkable beauty and strong social nature of the Gouldian Finch, one of Australia's most colourful native birds. As the first light of morning spreads across the tropical savanna, a lively flock gathers along graceful grass stems, feeding on ripening seed heads and greeting the new day together. Warm sunlight illuminates their jewel-like plumage, while soft golden grasses and scattered eucalyptus trees create a peaceful backdrop that reflects the open landscapes of northern Australia.

Gouldian Finch (Chloebia gouldiae)
The Gouldian Finch is one of Australia's most celebrated native birds and is found only in the tropical savannas of northern Australia. Highly social by nature, these finches live in flocks that move across the landscape in response to seasonal rainfall, following the availability of native grass seeds and reliable water sources. Their close flocking behaviour provides protection from predators while allowing birds to locate food efficiently across vast open country.
Although admired for their extraordinary colours, Gouldian Finches are also finely adapted to the seasonal rhythms of the tropical north. During the dry season they concentrate around permanent waterholes, while the arrival of summer rains triggers the growth of native grasses that sustain both adults and their young. Their dependence on healthy savanna ecosystems has made them one of Australia's most important flagship species for grassland conservation.

The Gouldian Finch is listed as Endangered both globally and nationally following significant population declines during the twentieth century. Once widespread across northern Australia, the species now survives in scattered populations, with fewer than 2,500 mature birds estimated to remain in the wild.
Its decline has been driven primarily by altered fire regimes, habitat degradation, grazing pressure, reduced availability of native grass seeds, and the loss of suitable nesting hollows. Historic trapping for the aviary trade also contributed to population reductions before legal protections were introduced. Recovery efforts now focus on restoring healthy savanna ecosystems through improved fire management, habitat protection, population monitoring, and the conservation of critical breeding and feeding areas. The Gouldian Finch has become one of Australia's most recognisable conservation ambassadors, demonstrating how thoughtful landscape management can help safeguard one of the world's most spectacular birds.
