PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Flowing Through the Highlands presents a broad gathering of Suri alpacas travelling through an open Andean valley beneath a wall of snow-covered mountains. The animals spread naturally across the pasture and along a worn trail, some walking toward the foreground while others pause to graze or turn toward neighbouring members of the herd. Their shared movement gives the composition a steady rhythm shaped by companionship rather than urgency.

The herd displays a rich range of natural fleece colours, including ivory, warm cream, silver-grey, chestnut, deep brown, and black. Long locks hang from their bodies in narrow strands, catching the clear mountain light and creating a shifting pattern of texture across the group. Flowering grasses and small alpine plants soften the rough ground, while terraced hillsides and weathered rock formations rise toward the distant peaks. The open scale of the landscape contrasts with the close social organisation of the animals, revealing how naturally the herd belongs within the high country. The artwork celebrates diversity, movement, and the collective presence of Suris within the landscape of their origin.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY

The Suri Alpaca (Vicugna pacos)

Andean alpaca husbandry has traditionally followed the seasonal availability of pasture and water. Herds may be moved between grazing areas as weather, plant growth, and elevation alter the condition of the landscape throughout the year. This mobility helps pastoral families use scattered resources without relying upon a single pasture continuously.

Suri alpacas share the strong herd instincts characteristic of all alpacas. They gain security from remaining in groups, communicate through posture and soft vocalisations, and often follow familiar animals during movement across open country. Experienced herders guide these journeys while observing body condition, fleece growth, and access to suitable forage.

Natural colour has also remained an important feature of Andean herds. Suri fibre can occur in numerous shades, allowing textiles to be produced in cream, fawn, brown, grey, and black with little or no dyeing. Preserving this diversity requires thoughtful breeding, particularly when certain colours or lock qualities become less common. The movement of a varied herd across the highlands therefore reflects both an enduring grazing tradition and a living store of genetic and cultural diversity.

CONSERVATION INFORMATION.
This design donates to animal and conservation efforts
Suri Alpaca (Vicugna pacos) breed. It is not assessed independently by the IUCN Red List, as it exists as a managed domestic livestock breed rather than a wild species.
