Curiosity in the Grass captures one of the earliest moments of discovery as two newly hatched chicks explore a meadow alive with fresh spring growth. Surrounded by dew-covered grasses, clover, and delicate wildflowers, the tiny birds pause to investigate the unfamiliar world around them with quiet concentration. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
Domestic Chicks (Gallus gallus domesticus) although domestic chickens have lived alongside people for thousands of years, they continue to display many of the natural behaviours inherited from their wild ancestors, the Red Junglefowl of Southeast Asia. Even within days of hatching, chicks instinctively peck, scratch, investigate unfamiliar objects, and explore the vegetation around them. These behaviours are far more than simple curiosity; they are essential learning experiences that help young birds identify food, recognise shelter, navigate their surroundings, and develop the skills needed for independent life.
Natural foraging also encourages physical coordination, strengthens muscles, and promotes healthy social interactions as chicks learn from one another while remaining close to the safety of the group. Every blade of grass, seed, leaf, and tiny insect becomes part of an ongoing lesson about the environment in which they live. This artwork celebrates those first adventurous explorations beyond the nest, capturing the wonder of discovery while reminding us that the instincts shaping domestic chickens today remain deeply connected to their ancient wild heritage.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
