PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Crown of Stone centres upon a mature Scottish Blackface ram standing on an exposed rocky ridge above a vast Highland valley. Facing the viewer, he holds a balanced, commanding posture, his broad chest and heavy fleece illuminated by the first warmth of sunrise. A pair of deeply curled horns frames the black-and-white face, their ridged surfaces catching narrow bands of amber light. The ram’s weathered wool falls in rough layers of stone grey, muted brown, and pale cream, closely echoing the tones of the ground beneath him.
Beyond the ridge, the land descends through heather-covered slopes and winding dry-stone walls towards a distant loch. Low mist gathers above the water and threads between successive mountain ranges, softening the valleys into blue-grey layers. Sunlight breaks through a clouded sky at the upper left, spreading a warm glow across the nearer hills while leaving the far peaks in shadow. The elevated viewpoint gives the landscape immense depth, yet the ram remains the unquestioned focal point—a still, sculptural presence held between ancient stone, rising light, and open country.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Scottish Blackface sheep (Ovis aries)
The precise beginnings of the Scottish Blackface are uncertain, although the breed became established in the border counties before spreading more widely through Scotland. During the nineteenth century, farmers increasingly recognised that Blackface sheep were better suited than many alternatives to exposed hills, poor grazing, and difficult weather. Their numbers expanded as practical performance became more valuable than the temporary advantages offered by finer wool breeds.
Different environments gradually produced regional types. The large-framed Perth type developed with heavier wool, while the medium-sized Lanark type became dominant through much of Scotland. Other forms, including the Northumberland type, reflected local climates, grazing quality, and breeding priorities.
These variations were not separate stories but responses within the same adaptable hill breed. Farmers selected animals suited to their own ground while retaining the horned head, marked face, white fleece, and maternal hardiness that unified the Blackface identity. The breed’s history is therefore one of regional refinement, shaped not by a single fixed model but by many landscapes and generations of practical judgement.
