Cradle of the Puggles reveals one of the most private moments in the life of Australia's most extraordinary mammal. Hidden deep within a carefully constructed riverbank burrow, a mother platypus curls protectively around her young while warm morning light filters softly through the entrance. Damp earth, exposed roots and scattered eucalyptus leaves create a natural nursery, where the gentle glow from outside contrasts with the cool shelter of the den.
The close composition draws attention to the quiet bond between mother and offspring. Their soft brown coats, broad bills and relaxed postures create a sense of warmth and security within the enclosed space. Rich earth tones, mossy greens and subtle highlights illuminate the textures of the burrow walls, reinforcing the feeling of protection that surrounds the family. The Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus)
The platypus has one of the most unusual reproductive cycles of any mammal. After mating, the female constructs an elaborate nesting burrow that may extend many metres into the riverbank, carefully lining the nesting chamber with damp leaves and vegetation carried beneath her curled tail.
Unlike almost all other mammals, the platypus lays one to three leathery eggs, which hatch after about ten days of incubation. The tiny young, known as puggles, remain entirely dependent on their mother for several months. Although platypuses produce milk, they have no nipples. Instead, milk is released through specialised patches of skin, allowing the puggles to lap it directly from the mother's fur.
Only when they are strong enough to swim and forage independently do the young finally leave the safety of the nursery burrow.

Successful breeding depends on stable riverbanks where females can excavate secure nesting burrows above normal water levels. Clearing of streamside vegetation, bank erosion, livestock access and sudden changes in river flow can damage these nesting sites or flood burrows before young platypuses are ready to leave.
Because females invest many months raising each litter, the loss of a breeding burrow can have a significant impact on local populations. Maintaining healthy riparian vegetation also provides shelter, stabilises riverbanks and supports the aquatic insects on which platypuses feed.
Many restoration projects now prioritise revegetating waterways, fencing sensitive riverbanks and improving catchment management to protect breeding habitat. These efforts help safeguard not only platypus nurseries but the overall health of Australia's freshwater environments.
