Chicks in the Straw captures the gentle bustle of a rustic hatchery as a newly hatched brood explores its first home beneath the warm glow of the rising sun. Surrounded by weathered timber walls, handcrafted nesting boxes, and a deep bed of golden straw, the tiny chicks venture cautiously across the barn floor while others remain perched within their cosy compartments, pausing to observe the unfamiliar world beyond. Soft shafts of morning light stream through the open barn door, filling the interior with a warm amber glow that transforms this humble farm building into a place of comfort, safety, and new beginnings.
The charm of the composition lies in the individuality of the young birds. Some eagerly peck at scattered grain, others balance curiously upon wooden ledges, while several gather together in small groups, reflecting the natural social behaviour that develops from their earliest days. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
Domestic Chicks (Gallus gallus domesticus) the emergence of a newly hatched chick marks one of the most remarkable moments in the life cycle of domestic poultry. After approximately twenty-one days of incubation, the chick uses a tiny temporary structure on the tip of its beak, known as the egg tooth, to carefully break through the shell. The process can take many hours, requiring patience and considerable effort before the chick finally emerges into the world. During these first moments of life, the soft down dries and fluffs as the hatchling gradually gains strength beneath the warmth and protection of its mother or a carefully managed brooding environment.
For countless generations, farmers have prepared straw-lined nests to provide insulation, comfort, and security for eggs and newly hatched chicks. These simple nesting places have remained an enduring symbol of rural life, where each successful hatch represents the continuation of the flock and the promise of seasons yet to come. This artwork celebrates those precious first hours after hatching, capturing the warmth, vulnerability, and quiet optimism that accompany every new generation born within the familiar surroundings of the farm.
