Cheek in the Gums celebrates the playful spirit and boundless curiosity of the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo within the lively heart of an Australian eucalyptus woodland. At the centre of the composition, a confident cockatoo leans forward with an inquisitive tilt of its head, creating the unmistakable impression that it is inspecting the viewer as much as the viewer is admiring it. Studies have shown that cockatoos can develop innovative behaviours, with new skills spreading socially through local flocks.
Highly social throughout their lives, Sulphur-crested Cockatoos form strong family bonds and gather in noisy flocks that communicate through an impressive range of calls, body language, and expressive crest displays. Their distinctive yellow crest is raised during excitement, courtship, alarm, and social interaction, serving as an important visual signal between birds. The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is classified as Least Concern and remains one of Australia's most widespread and successful native bird species. Strong populations occur across forests, woodlands, agricultural districts, parks, and urban environments, reflecting the species' exceptional adaptability and resilience. While populations in parts of New Guinea have experienced declines through habitat loss, Australian populations remain stable and secure.
Despite its abundance, the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is protected under Australian Commonwealth and state wildlife legislation. Like many native parrots, it depends on mature hollow-bearing trees for nesting, making the conservation of old-growth woodland and large habitat trees increasingly important as urban development expands. Protecting these breeding sites helps ensure that future generations of these intelligent, highly social birds continue to bring their unmistakable calls, playful antics, and vibrant presence to Australia's forests and communities.
