PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Brumby Creek Crossing captures a peaceful moment as a small family band of wild brumbies makes its way through a crystal-clear mountain stream beneath the shelter of towering snow gums. Leading the group, a vigilant mare steps confidently across the shallow water while the remaining adults and two curious foals follow close behind, each carefully navigating the rocky creek bed. Sunlight filters through the twisting eucalyptus branches above, scattering warm reflections across the rippling water and illuminating the horses as they move through the landscape. Granite boulders, native shrubs, and dense alpine vegetation surround the crossing, creating a richly detailed setting that feels both secluded and expansive. The gentle movement of the water, the close formation of the family group, and the quiet beauty of the bush combine to create a scene that celebrates the harmony between the horses and their natural surroundings.

Soft afternoon light fills the composition with warm tones of golden ochre, muted olive, eucalyptus green, and weathered granite grey, reflecting the distinctive colours of the Australian High Country. The varied coats of the brumbies, from rich bay and deep brown to soft dun, provide natural contrast while remaining perfectly balanced against the surrounding bushland. Sunlight dancing across the clear water introduces shimmering highlights that mirror the warm hues of the horses and the foliage above, adding depth and movement throughout the scene. Together, the restrained palette, layered vegetation, and sparkling mountain stream create an atmosphere of quiet tranquillity, inviting the viewer into an intimate glimpse of life within Australia's alpine wilderness.

ABOUT THIS COLLECTION

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY

The Brumby (Equus ferus caballus) is Australia's best-known feral horse, descended from domestic horses that escaped, were released, or were abandoned during the colonial period. Over generations, these free-ranging horses established populations across much of the continent, particularly throughout the Great Dividing Range, the Snowy Mountains, and the alpine regions of south-eastern Australia. Isolated from domestic management, natural selection favoured horses possessing exceptional endurance, soundness, intelligence, and sure-footedness, enabling them to survive in landscapes where seasonal conditions can change rapidly.

This artwork celebrates one of the most important aspects of Brumby life: the family band. Led by experienced mares, these closely bonded groups move together in search of water, shelter, and grazing, while foals learn essential survival skills through observation and social interaction. Brumby Creek Crossing captures this quiet moment of cooperation as the herd negotiates a mountain stream, illustrating the trust, communication, and collective awareness that underpin life in the Australian wilderness. Rather than focusing solely on the Brumby's controversial status, the piece honours its extraordinary capacity to adapt and survive in one of the world's most demanding environments.
