Alpine Beacon draws the viewer into the cool stillness of Australia's high-country wetlands, where one of the nation's rarest amphibians rests upon a vibrant carpet of dew-laden sphagnum moss. The Southern Corroboree Frog commands immediate attention, its bold canary-yellow bands sharply contrasting against a glossy black body that glistens with moisture. Every droplet reflects the soft mountain light, while tiny insects suspended in the mist hint at the quiet life that surrounds this diminutive predator. The intimate perspective invites close observation, revealing the intricate textures of the frog's skin, the delicate moss beneath its feet, and the pristine conditions of its fragile alpine home.

The Southern Corroboree Frog (Pseudophryne corroboree)
Is found only within a small area of the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, where it inhabits cool sphagnum bogs, wet heathlands, and alpine seepages at elevations rarely occupied by other Australian frogs. Its striking black-and-yellow pattern is an example of aposematic colouration, a visual warning that advertises its chemical defences to potential predators. Unlike most poisonous amphibians, which obtain defensive compounds from their diet, the Southern Corroboree Frog is one of the very few frog species known to synthesise its own alkaloid toxins, making it an important subject of scientific research into amphibian evolution and chemical defence.
The species takes its common name from the Aboriginal word corroboree, traditionally describing ceremonial gatherings and celebrations, a reference inspired by its vivid appearance. Although only a few centimetres long, it has become one of Australia's best-known amphibians, symbolising both the unique biodiversity of the alpine region and the importance of protecting specialised mountain ecosystems that support an extraordinary range of life.

The Southern Corroboree Frog is regarded as one of Australia's most endangered amphibians, with wild populations declining dramatically following the arrival of chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis). This disease attacks the skin of amphibians, disrupting essential physiological functions and causing severe mortality throughout the frog's already limited alpine range. Because the species naturally occupies only a small number of mountain wetlands, it is particularly vulnerable to disease outbreaks, prolonged drought, altered snow cover, and the changing temperature and rainfall patterns associated with climate change.
Conservation of the Southern Corroboree Frog has become one of Australia's most intensive amphibian recovery efforts. Captive breeding programs at institutions including Taronga Zoo and Zoos Victoria maintain insurance populations while researchers investigate disease resistance and improved reintroduction methods. Habitat restoration, careful management of alpine bogs, and ongoing monitoring within Kosciuszko National Park are helping safeguard remaining populations. Although the species continues to face significant challenges, these coordinated efforts offer genuine hope that this distinctive amphibian will remain a living part of Australia's alpine landscapes rather than becoming a symbol of extinction.
