A Curious Glance offers an intimate portrait of one of Australia's most recognisable birds, inviting the viewer into a rare moment of quiet observation. Warm afternoon light filters through softly blurred eucalypts, bathing the scene in gentle golden tones while placing complete focus on the emu's expressive face. Every subtle detail is revealed, from the weathered texture of the beak to the delicate wisps of feathering around the crown and neck.
The bird's rich amber eye meets the viewer with a gaze that appears thoughtful, alert, and quietly inquisitive. Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae)
Emus possess exceptionally well-developed eyesight, allowing them to detect movement across Australia's vast open landscapes. Their large eyes provide a wide field of view, helping them locate food, identify potential threats, and navigate changing environments. Combined with acute hearing, these senses enable emus to remain highly aware of their surroundings while travelling through grasslands, woodlands, and semi-arid country.
Naturally inquisitive, emus frequently pause to investigate unfamiliar objects, animals, or sounds before deciding whether to approach or move away. This cautious curiosity has been observed for generations by Indigenous Australians, pastoralists, and naturalists alike. Although often perceived simply as large flightless birds, individual emus display distinct temperaments and behavioural differences, reminding us that personality exists throughout the natural world as well as within our own.

Although emus remain widespread across much of mainland Australia, some regional populations have become increasingly isolated as native vegetation has been cleared for agriculture and urban development. The endangered NSW North Coast population now survives within a fragmented landscape where suitable habitat is separated by roads, fencing, and expanding human settlements.
Protecting habitat connectivity has become one of the highest priorities for regional conservation. Restoring native vegetation, maintaining wildlife corridors, and carefully planning future development all help reconnect isolated populations while allowing birds to move safely between feeding and breeding areas.
These local conservation initiatives demonstrate that even widespread species benefit from ongoing stewardship. By protecting regional populations before they decline further, conservationists help preserve the ecological resilience and genetic diversity of Australia's largest native bird.

As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
