PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Windfloat captures the remarkable precision of the Nankeen Kestrel as it hangs suspended above an open Australian paddock, balanced effortlessly between earth and sky. Illuminated by the warm glow of the late afternoon sun, the small falcon appears almost motionless against a landscape of golden grasses, scattered wildflowers, and weathered fence posts that stretch towards distant eucalypts beneath a softly hazed horizon. Every element of the countryside is bathed in rich amber light, evoking the quiet stillness that settles across rural Australia as the day begins to fade.
The kestrel dominates the composition with wings fully extended and tail delicately fanned, each feather glowing as sunlight passes through the translucent flight feathers. Fine markings across the breast and underwings are revealed in exceptional detail, while tiny insects and drifting dust particles catch the light around the hovering bird. Though poised in apparent stillness, every muscle suggests intense concentration as its keen gaze remains fixed upon the ground below. The artwork celebrates one of Australia's most recognisable aerial displays, portraying a hunter whose mastery lies not in speed alone, but in perfect control of the wind itself.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
Nankeen Kestrel (Falco cenchroides)
The Nankeen Kestrel is Australia's smallest falcon and one of the country's most widespread birds of prey, occurring across almost every mainland habitat from arid deserts and native grasslands to farmland, coastal plains, and suburban fringes. It is best known for its remarkable ability to hover almost motionless while searching for prey, a behaviour known as wind-hovering. By combining rapid wingbeats with constant adjustments of its tail and body position, the kestrel can remain suspended above a single point, carefully scanning the ground before dropping swiftly onto unsuspecting prey..
Exceptional eyesight allows the kestrel to detect even the slightest movement among grasses and leaf litter, where insects, mice, small reptiles, and other animals may be concealed. This highly efficient hunting strategy enables the species to exploit open landscapes where elevated perches are scarce. Its adaptability has allowed the Nankeen Kestrel to flourish alongside both natural ecosystems and agricultural environments, making it one of the most familiar and widely observed raptors across the Australian continent.

CONSERVATION INFORMATION.

This design donates to animal and conservation efforts
The Nankeen Kestrel remains abundant throughout much of Australia, reflecting its remarkable adaptability and broad geographic range. Nevertheless, healthy populations continue to depend upon open landscapes that support abundant prey and provide safe nesting sites in mature trees, cliffs, or suitable artificial structures. As a natural predator of rodents, insects, and small reptiles, the species performs an important ecological service, particularly within agricultural regions where it contributes to the natural regulation of pest populations.
Modern conservation focuses on maintaining healthy rural ecosystems through the protection of remnant woodland, native grasslands, and scattered paddock trees that provide nesting and hunting opportunities. The careful use of agricultural chemicals is also important, as secondary poisoning from contaminated prey can affect birds of prey throughout the food chain. Encouraging biodiversity on farms, retaining native vegetation, and supporting sustainable land management practices all help preserve the open-country habitats upon which the Nankeen Kestrel depends. By protecting these working landscapes, we also ensure that one of Australia's most accomplished aerial hunters continues to hover above the countryside for generations to come.
