BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Welsummer (Gallus gallus domesticus) is a distinguished Dutch heritage breed developed during the early twentieth century in the village of Welsum in the Netherlands. Created through the careful blending of several traditional farmyard breeds, Welsummers were specifically bred to be hardy, productive, and well suited to free-range agricultural life. Today they are recognized worldwide for their attractive appearance and excellent utility qualities. Roosters display a striking combination of deep mahogany, copper, gold, and black plumage, while hens wear beautifully patterned partridge feathers that provide both elegance and practical camouflage. Their active, intelligent nature makes them exceptional foragers, perfectly adapted to life in open pasture and orchard environments. Perhaps their most celebrated contribution is their production of large, rich terracotta-brown eggs, often adorned with darker speckles that have become highly sought after among poultry enthusiasts. The breed gained further international recognition through its resemblance to the iconic rooster featured on Kellogg's Corn Flakes packaging.
