The Twilight Hunter captures the extraordinary precision of one of Australia's most agile nocturnal predators as it pursues a moth through the fading light of a eucalyptus forest. Suspended in full flight, Gould's Wattled Bat twists effortlessly through shafts of golden evening sunlight, its broad wings illuminated to reveal the delicate network of membranes that power its remarkable aerial manoeuvres. The tiny insect ahead becomes the focus of an intense chase, while drifting insects and distant bats hint at the hidden activity unfolding throughout the woodland as day gives way to night.
Towering gum trunks recede into soft woodland shadows, creating depth and atmosphere while framing the bat's split-second pursuit. Warm amber light filters through the canopy, catching floating insects like tiny sparks suspended in the air. The composition celebrates both movement and precision, revealing a hunter whose remarkable abilities remain largely unseen despite playing an essential role in Australia's evening forests.

The Gould's Wattled Bat (Chalinolobus gouldii)
The Gould's Wattled Bat is one of Australia's most widespread and adaptable microbats, occurring throughout much of the continent in forests, woodlands, coastal heath, farmland, and many urban environments. Despite its small size, it is a highly accomplished aerial hunter, emerging soon after sunset to capture moths, beetles, mosquitoes, and countless other flying insects that become active during the night.
Unlike the larger flying-foxes, Gould's Wattled Bat navigates using echolocation. It emits rapid ultrasonic calls that bounce from surrounding objects before returning as echoes, allowing the bat to build an extraordinarily detailed acoustic picture of its surroundings. This sophisticated sensory system enables it to detect prey, avoid obstacles, and manoeuvre through dense woodland with remarkable speed and precision, even in complete darkness.
The species commonly roosts beneath loose bark, within tree hollows, and occasionally inside buildings where suitable natural shelters are limited. By consuming thousands of insects throughout its lifetime, Gould's Wattled Bat performs an important ecological role, helping regulate insect populations while demonstrating the remarkable diversity of Australia's nocturnal wildlife.

The Gould's Wattled Bat (Chalinolobus gouldii) is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List and is not listed as threatened under Australia's national environmental legislation. It remains widespread across a broad range of habitats and has adapted well to many modified landscapes, provided suitable roosting sites remain available.
Although populations are generally secure, the loss of mature hollow-bearing trees through land clearing, forestry operations, and urban development can reduce the availability of essential daytime roosts. Artificial lighting, habitat fragmentation, and disturbance of established roost sites may also affect local populations, particularly where native vegetation has become increasingly isolated.
Conservation efforts focus on retaining old-growth trees, protecting native woodland habitat, and incorporating wildlife-friendly management into urban planning.
