PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Sunlit Nectar Seeker captures a Little Red Flying-fox engaged in the nightly work that makes the species an important partner within Australia’s flowering forests. Hanging beneath a eucalyptus branch heavy with pale blossoms, the animal pauses between feeding movements, its muzzle and surrounding fur dusted with fine golden pollen. One wing opens beside its body, catching the evening light and revealing the delicate veins and folds within the translucent membrane.
Warm amber illumination spreads across the flying-fox, flowers and airborne pollen, while the surrounding colony fades into soft shadow behind the central figure. Small insects drift among the blossoms, adding movement to the glowing air as the bat remains securely suspended by its curved claws. The close perspective draws attention not only to the animal’s russet coat and finely structured wings, but also to the visible evidence of its feeding. The composition transforms a quiet moment among eucalyptus flowers into a portrait of natural purpose, revealing the connection between a travelling mammal and the forests renewed through its nightly visits.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Little Red Flying-fox (Pteropus scapulatus)
The Little Red Flying-fox feeds heavily on the nectar and pollen of flowering eucalypts, bloodwoods, paperbarks and other native trees. Its narrow muzzle can reach between clusters of stamens, while the tongue and facial fur collect nectar and become coated with pollen during feeding.
As the animal moves between flowers and then travels to another tree, some of this pollen is transferred. Because flying-foxes can cover long distances in a single night, they carry pollen much farther than many insects and birds. This helps trees reproduce beyond their immediate neighbourhood and maintains genetic exchange between separated forest patches.
The relationship benefits both animal and forest. Blossoms provide the high-energy food needed for flight, while the flying-fox supports the production of seeds and future trees. The pollen visible across the animal’s face is therefore more than a trace of its meal; it records an ecological partnership that contributes to the regeneration, diversity and long-term resilience of Australian woodlands.

The Little Red Flying-fox remains common across much of its range, but individuals face avoidable dangers when natural food is scarce or flowering trees occur close to farms and suburban areas. Animals feeding in backyard fruit trees and orchards may become caught in loose or wide-meshed netting, leading to injury, dehydration or death.
The safest crop and garden protection uses tightly stretched, wildlife-safe netting with very small mesh. Protecting native blossom resources beyond towns is equally important because abundant natural food reduces the need for flying-foxes to enter orchards and gardens. Loss of feeding trees can concentrate large numbers within the few flowering areas that remain.
Community education, wildlife-safe netting standards and the protection of flowering forests can greatly reduce these pressures. Conserving the Little Red Flying-fox also preserves a pollination service that operates across enormous distances each night. By moving pollen between separated trees, these animals help native forests produce the seeds from which future woodland generations will grow.
