The Spotted Oxford is a dignified portrait of one of Britain's most recognisable heritage pig breeds, standing quietly within the timeless landscape of the English countryside. The Oxford Sandy and Black Pig (Sus scrofa domesticus)
The Oxford Sandy and Black is one of Britain's oldest native pig breeds, with origins in Oxfordshire and the surrounding counties dating back more than two centuries. Affectionately known as the "Plum Pudding Pig," the breed is instantly recognised by its warm sandy coat marked with distinctive black patches, making each animal uniquely patterned. Traditionally kept by smallholders, it earned a reputation for its calm temperament, hardy constitution, and excellent foraging ability, thriving in woodlands, orchards, and pasture long before intensive farming became widespread. During the twentieth century the breed declined to dangerously low numbers as commercial production favoured more specialised livestock, but the dedication of rare-breed societies and conservation breeders secured its survival. Today, the Oxford Sandy and Black stands as a proud symbol of Britain's agricultural heritage, admired for its gentle nature, resilience, and enduring connection to traditional countryside farming.
