The Shih Tzu traces its origins to the royal courts of imperial China, although its earliest ancestors are widely believed to have arrived from Tibet as treasured diplomatic gifts. Within the secluded palaces of successive Chinese dynasties, these small companion dogs were carefully bred over many centuries, where refinement, affectionate temperament, and close companionship were valued above any practical working purpose. Their long association with the imperial household established the Shih Tzu as one of the most distinguished companion breeds in the history of domestic dogs.
The breed's name, commonly translated as "Lion Dog," reflects its resemblance to the stylised guardian lions that feature prominently throughout Chinese art, architecture, and Buddhist tradition. Despite this symbolic title, the Shih Tzu was prized not for strength or hunting ability, but for its gentle nature, confidence, and unwavering devotion to the people with whom it lived. Palace life shaped a breed that was calm, attentive, and deeply bonded to its human companions, qualities that have remained remarkably consistent through the centuries. We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
