The Rustic Hatchery captures the joyful beginnings of farm life as a lively brood of newly hatched chicks ventures beyond their shells into the warm shelter of a traditional timber barn. Nestled among weathered nesting boxes, scattered straw, and freshly broken eggshells, the tiny birds cautiously explore their surroundings, each taking its first tentative steps into a world filled with light, warmth, and discovery. Golden morning sunlight pours through the open barn door, filling the interior with a gentle amber glow that illuminates drifting feathers, textured timber, and the soft down of the curious young flock.
The composition beautifully conveys the excitement and uncertainty of these earliest moments of independence. Some chicks remain close to the nesting boxes, while others confidently investigate scattered grain across the straw-covered floor or perch upon wooden ledges to survey their new surroundings. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
Domestic Chicks (Gallus gallus domesticus) the first hours after hatching are among the most important in a chick's development. During this brief period, young birds begin forming their earliest behavioural bonds through a process known as imprinting, instinctively recognising and following their mother or another trusted source of safety. This remarkable adaptation helps keep chicks close to protection while they learn essential behaviours such as feeding, drinking, resting, and responding to potential danger. These early experiences lay the foundation for healthy development and social behaviour throughout life.
Long before modern incubation systems became commonplace, traditional farm hatcheries and brooding sheds provided carefully prepared environments where chicks could hatch and grow safely. Warm bedding, shelter from the elements, and attentive husbandry ensured that young birds remained protected during their most vulnerable days. This artwork pays tribute to those humble rural spaces where countless generations of chicks first encountered the world, celebrating not only the beginning of life but also the enduring relationship between careful stewardship and successful poultry keeping.

We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
